Networking is daunting. Especially when you’re new to the game. Community networking guru and the host of our 2025 Emerging Leader Network Accelerator, Gabby Rodriguez, has some quick tips to help you overcome your fears.
1. Fake it until you make it.
Put your brave face on even when you feel anxious and intimidated. In those moments, practice positive self-talk to help get you through. “You have to look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself you are brave, confident, social. You can and will do this.”
2. Be genuine.
Don’t force business. Get to know the person first and worry about work later. “Networking isn’t about getting something out of the event. It’s about making long-lasting relationships.”
3. Find commonality.
“Commonality opens up the discussion, opens up the conversation. Find common interests, common hobbies. If you both have corgis, talk about your corgis. Things like that make a long-lasting impression.” Talk about things you’re passionate about. It will be fun (and memorable) for you and the person you’re speaking to.
4. Study the attendee list.
Research will help you prepare and ease your nerves. “Know your audience. Try to find out what people are going to be there. Then, look them up. Don’t be shy! Look up what they look like, what their bio is. Be prepared. It will make you feel more confident.”
5. Follow up!
“Always, always, always follow up on opportunities. If someone is kind enough to give you resources, referrals, advice, you better act on it! Follow up.” Don’t let all your work go to waste. You made the initial connection. Now go build it into a thriving relationship! You, your career, and your company will benefit.
