Litza Bodden of Shining Lights Counseling shares her practical tips for incorporating self care into your life and feeling good about it.

In our relentlessly fast-paced world, many of us face the challenge of balancing professional commitments with familial responsibilities. Constant demands and immense pressure from both sides can be overwhelming.

This delicate juggling act can leave little time or energy for self-care and often leads to feelings of guilt when you prioritize your well-being. However, it's crucial to recognize that self-care is not a luxury; it's necessary for maintaining mental health and overall happiness.

Here are some tips to help you embrace self care without the side of guilt.

1. Acknowledge Your Multifaceted Role.

Recognize and honor the multiple roles you play in your life, both professionally and personally. You are not only a dedicated professional but also a loving partner, parent, daughter, and friend. Embrace the complexity of your identity and acknowledge that taking care of yourself is essential for fulfilling all these roles effectively.

2. Communicate Your Needs.

Don't hesitate to let your loved ones know your needs. Be open and honest about the importance of self-care for your mental health and well-being. Discuss ways in which they can support you in carving out time for yourself, whether it's by sharing household responsibilities, arranging childcare, or simply offering words of encouragement. This can help prevent conflict and hold you accountable.

3. Prioritize Quality Over Quantity.

Self-care doesn't have to be time-consuming to be effective. Instead of focusing on how much time you spend on self-care activities, prioritize the quality of the time you invest in yourself. Whether it's a brief meditation session during your lunch break, a leisurely walk with your family in the evening, or a cozy movie night at home, cherish the moments of relaxation and rejuvenation.

4. Involve Your Loved Ones.

Incorporate self-care activities that involve your loved ones whenever possible. Instead of viewing self-care as separate from your family responsibilities, find ways to integrate the two. Whether it's cooking a healthy meal together, going for a family hike, or practicing gratitude rituals before bedtime, involve your loved ones in your self-care journey and strengthen your bonds in the process.

5. Practice Self-Compassion.

Be gentle with yourself and practice self-compassion. Recognize that you're doing the best you can, given the circumstances, and that it's okay to prioritize your own needs at times. Let go of perfectionism and unrealistic expectations, and embrace the uncertainties of life with kindness and understanding.

Daily Self-Care Practices:

In addition to these overarching strategies, incorporating daily self-care practices into your routine can further enhance your well-being without taking up much extra time:

  • Morning Routine: Start your day with intention by engaging in a morning routine that sets a positive tone for the day ahead. This could include activities such as journaling, meditation, or enjoying a nutritious breakfast.
  • Movement Breaks: Incorporate short movement breaks throughout your day to combat the sedentary nature of desk work. Whether it's stretching at your desk, going for a brisk walk during lunch, or practicing yoga stretches, movement can help alleviate stress and improve mood.
  • Mindful Moments: Take a few moments throughout the day to practice mindfulness and bring your awareness to the present moment. This could involve deep breathing exercises, mindful eating, or simply taking a moment to appreciate your surroundings.
  • Digital Detox: Set boundaries around your use of technology to prevent digital overwhelm and promote mental clarity. Designate times during the day when you disconnect from screens and engage in activities that nourish your mind and soul.
  • Evening Wind-Down: Establish a calming evening routine to unwind and prepare for restful sleep. This could include activities such as reading, taking a warm bath, or practicing relaxation techniques to signal to your body and mind that it's time to relax.

Balancing the demands of a career with familial or personal responsibilities can be challenging, but it's essential to prioritize self-care amidst the chaos. Remember, taking care of yourself isn't selfish—it's a necessary investment in your overall well-being and the well-being of those you love.
